“We wanted an all-inclusive luxury tent camp, something that wasn’t too mainstream,” Cecilia said. “We loved the one that [they] chose because it gave back to the community and was environmentally conscious.” That was a big plus for Cecilia especially, as she’s in law school studying environmental law.
Practically every moment at the Karen Blixen Camp was memorable. On their first safari ride they saw a pride of about 40 lions, with 12 lion cubs running and pouncing each other — and that was just the beginning. They were also able to see cheetahs, elephants, ostriches, water buffalo, wildebeest and more.
Even back at camp there was plenty to see.
“All the cabins lined the river and the river was filled with hippos,” Cecilia said. “So you could eat lunch on the banks of the river where all these hippos are hanging out and sometimes giraffes and elephants would come to drink.”
Of course, spotting all these wild animals was an amazing experience, but Cecilia and Jake also made time for a little romance — it was their honeymoon after all. They lounged on the secluded porch in front of their cabin, laid by the pool in between safari rides and enjoyed complimentary massages from the camp. But their most romantic moment involved a dinner in the middle of nowhere.
“One night our server set up a table for us in the middle of the bush with lots of candles and a fire pit,” Cecilia said. “It was so romantic being on our own far away from camp.”
All the romance, exotic locales and lion cubs more than made up for the travel snafus Cecilia and Jake experienced. And at least they learned a few things along the way.
“I definitely underestimated how awesome it was to have a professional plan it for us,” Cecilia said. “It was really nice to show up and have everything taken care of and when things went wrong we weren’t on our own. And I learned when you are stranded talking to someone in person [like at the airport] is a lot better than trying to get someone on the phone to help you. Also, Emma [our agent at Elevate Destinations] gave me the wise advice to bring snacks, water and toilet paper with me to the airport. Those definitely came in handy.”
It may not have been a fairytale ending to their honeymoon, but if the Segals can survive a burnt down airport and countless delays, their marriage is off to a strong start.
