If you love hotels with a bit of history, how about staying at one of the oldest in Switzerland? Hotel Interlaken in Interlaken, Switzerland, began as a guest house in 1323 and has been taking care of guests to this gorgeous mountain town ever since.

Of course, Hotel Interlaken has been updated over the years (although you can still see some of the original walls in the lobby and restaurant). Today the rooms are modern and comfortable, and decently-sized for European hotel rooms.

Interlaken is a lovely town with plenty of parks, cute shops and restaurants — all of which are within an easy walk of the hotel. So too is the East Interlaken train station, which is not only helpful for your arrival/departure, but should you intend to travel up to Piz Gloria, Murren or other nearby Alpine destinations. Besides general sight seeing, the area is very popular amongst skiers as well as hikers and mountain bikers in the warmer months when the snow melts away to reveal a majestic landscape of green grass and wild flowers.

Is it a good location for a honeymoon? Well, look at that view! We certainly think so, especially if you’re an outdoorsy couple who still wants to enjoy a great meal and creature comforts after a day spent exploring the great outdoors. Hotel Interlaken delivers on both counts. Besides our well-appointed and surprisingly huge Junior Suite, check-in was a breeze and the staff was more than happy to answer questions, provide a Swiss power adapter and help us with dinner reservations to the in-house restaurant, Taverne. We enjoyed fondue and rosti – a dish that’s a bit like fancy hash browns and something American restaurants really need to get on board with. Our room rate also included the breakfast buffet in the restaurant — a good mix of pastries and hot options plus a delicious beverage called “vitamin juice,” which is popular in Germany and consists of what we think is a mix of orange and carrot.

Another bonus is the parking lot in the back, which is a great feature if you’ve rented a car. No matter how you arrive, however, Hotel Interlaken and its charming town in central Switzerland is a wonderful place to visit.
