Scouting Riviera Maya: Maroma Resort and Spa

As we bumped along the rutted dirt road two thoughts came to mind: One, this can’t possibly be the road to a luxury resort. And two, if this is the road, it better be worth this assault on our rental car. It was – on both accounts.

Maroma resort feels like it’s in the middle of an isolated jungle. It’s only once you hit the beach, and see the other hotels lining the sand, that you realize you’re part of the developing Riviera Maya that stretches from Cancun past Playa del Carmen. We had the opportunity to tour Maroma Resort and Spa, an Orient-Express hotel, and found it would make for a fabulous intimate honeymoon or destination wedding. Take a look at the photos below to see if it’s right for you.

A standard room comes with a queen size bed and fun amenities like a hammock on the balcony and hand-crafted slippers. It does NOT however, come with a TV (but who needs it with the ocean right there?).

The lobby at Maroma is a small, open-air space so when large groups come in they’re checked in here at the Guest Lounge. This is also where you can relax and read a book or watch TV (if you simply must).

One of several pools dotting the property, this one is surrounded by lush jungle.

Each of the buildings in the hotel are named. This is a room in the Corona (meaning crown, not the beer) building. A suite at Maroma has a living room and even more roomy bathroom.

Each of the rooms has an aromatherapy menu so you can select the scent that fits your stay.

This ocean-front suite has a plunge pool at the entrance, an outdoor shower, even a small gym. It also has private cabanas for spa treatments just outside. You’d never have to leave! And not to name-drop (but to totally name drop) Tom Cruise, Justin Timberlake and Michael Kors have all stayed here.
