One of my favorite things to do during a Walt Disney World vacation is to “drink around the world.” Indeed, we can’t think of a WDW honeymoon without a lengthy trip around Epcot’s World Showcase, stopping by each of the 11 pavilions to enjoy a signature cocktail, brew and/or snack from the country in question.
So join my husband James and I on a pair of our trips “around the world.” We always go counterclockwise, starting in Mexico and ending in Canada because … actually, I have no idea why. That’s just what James insists upon. Note, we wouldn’t imbibe in everything you read here in a single trip, but here are your options nevertheless.
Drink of choice: Tequila tasting at La Cava del Tequila Cantina
Snack of choice: Churro
Activity of choice: Anything but the Grand Fiesta Tour ride. It’s an insult to Mexico … and ducks. Instead, like us, take a picture that makes it look like you’re about to be sacrificed, yet oddly happy about it.
Drink of choice: Carlsberg Beer. Yes, it’s from Denmark, but it’s still Scandinavia.
Snack of choice: Any dessert from Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe.
Activity of choice: Maelstrom ride. Stick around for the movie afterward. It’s polite … and the movie’s super ’80s.
Drink of choice: Green tea from the tea kiosk. With all that alcohol, some antioxidants will do you good.
Snack of choice: Pot stickers from Lotus Blossom Cafe
Activity of choice: “Reflections of China” Circle-Vision 360 Movie
Drink of choice: You’re in Germany. You’re getting a beer.
Snack of choice: Authentic Bavarian pretzel.
Activity of choice: Unlike me in this picture, do not answer a call from your mother. Otherwise, you’re in Germany. Drink beer, eat pretzels. You could also make dinner reservations at the Biergarten so that you can return later to drink more beer, eat more pretzels.
Drink of choice: Chianti at Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar
Snack of choice: Gelatto from Gelatti
Activity of choice: Watch one of the many street shows performed in San Marcos Square.
The American Adventure
Drink of choice: Water. Hydration’s important and sadly America’s craft brewing scene hasn’t caught on at Epcot.
Snack of choice: Mmmmm, funnel cake.
Activity of choice: Take a nap during the American Adventure show. Sorry, we’ve never been able to stay awake. Maybe it was all that beer in Germany.
Drink of choice: Sake
Snack of choice: Sushi from Katsura Grill (if you have more time, it’s better at the sit-down Tokyo Dining)
Activity of choice: Take a stroll through the Japanese garden while the Taiko drummers perform.
Drink of choice: Tangerine slushy
Snack of choice: Anything from the Tangierine Cafe. It’s my husband James’ favorite World Showcase lunch spot.
Activity of choice: Enjoy the peace and (relative) quiet of the alley that leads to Morocco’s superb Restaurant Marrakesh.
Drink of choice: Grand Marnier slushy (pictured). Champagne works too.
Snack of choice: Pastry from Les Halles Boulangerie & Patisserie
Activity of choice: Watch “Impressions de France” movie. The visuals and music are beautiful — at least that’s what James says. I always seem to fall asleep.
Drink of choice: Pint of ale at Rose & Crown Pub
Snack of choice: Bag of crisps. Or, if you haven’t eaten quite enough yet, fish & chips from the Yorkshire County Fish Shop
Activity of choice: Enjoy that pint and those crisps in the Rose & Crown. That’s pretty much the most authentically British thing you could do.
Drink of choice: Labatt Blue
Snack of choice: Sadly, they no longer seem to sell beavertails at the Canada pavilion (a pastry covered in sauces such as maple and/or chocolate). Let’s go with some maple candy in the Northwest mercantile shop, then.
Activity of choice: Watch the “O Canada!” Circle-Vision 360 movie starring Martin Short. It gets a round of applause every time.
So there you have it, that’s our little drinking trip around the world. Now all you need to do now is head over to Spaceship Earth and have a rest while listening to the soothing vocal tones of Dame Judi Dench.
